Lyle and Scott

Lyle & Scott’s rich heritage dates back to 1874 when William Lyle and Walker Scott borrowed £1300 to set up a small knitwear company in the Scottish Borders. It wasn’t long before Lyle & Scott earned a reputation for quality and style and the company achieved phenomenal growth in its early years as a consequence. By the 1950’s Lyle & Scott was regarded highly enough to design an exclusive cashmere collection for Christian Dior. In 1967 the now iconic Lyle & Scott Eagle was born and for the rest of the century the brand formed a close association with golf, manufacturing high quality knitwear and outerwear. Inspired first by American golfer Doug Sanders’ love of bright colours, Lyle & Scott would later dress some of the sports biggest stars, including Tony Jacklin, Gary Player and Greg Norman.

At the turn of the century the Lyle & Scott brand was re-launched with a strong identity, at once faithful to its rich heritage, while thoroughly updated for a new generation, whose heroes appear in bands and on television as well as on the sports field. The Lyle & Scott Vintage line references the past while drawing heavily on indie and modernist principles. Its slim fit, edgy aesthetic and golden eagle is applied to cardigans, v-neck knits and polo’s in an array of bright colours and neutral shades, worn by the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and the Arctic Monkeys as well as equally influential street style stars from around the world. As the second decade of the new millennium begins, Lyle & Scott continue to go from strength to strength, expanding collections and refining design to ensure the now cult label stays relevant for decades to come; Lyle & Scott’s £1300 loan turned out to be a good investment.
